Addiction

Some involve a substance (i.e., a drug such as nicotine, marijuana and alcohol) and therefore physiological addiction, and others do not (i.e., nail biting, gambling, hair pulling, shopping, etc.).

All addictions have a psychological element to them; a need to engage in the addiction to, for example, feel good, escape, or avoid a feeling or situation.

The more you engage in it, and therefore the more you reinforce it, the more robust it becomes in terms of neural pathways in the brain.

Regardless of whether or not there is a physiological component, as in substance addictions, you will get a ‘hit’ or ‘payoff’ each time you engage in it.

Eventually this ‘payoff’ leads to dependence, and when you try to stop, a feeling of being out of control, and being at the mercy of it, which is a horrible feeling.

Bad Habit

Bad habits, in contrast, are not as extreme as addictions, and there is often a feeling of choosing to engage in it rather than having an uncontrollable compulsion to engage in it.

Like addictions, there are psychological elements to bad habits, and clients will commonly state that they have no or are lacking in ‘will power’ to put an end to the habit.

Generally speaking, clients tend to recognize when they are addicted to something rather than engage in the behaviour out of habit.

Some forms of addictions and bad habits ‘seem’ to run in families and there may be a genetic link; however, they may also be learned behaviour.
