At North Shore & City Hypnotherapy, we see countless clients with digestive disorders, particularly those coming in for hypnotherapy for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
Our aim is to help you manage your symptoms, and where possible heal them naturally!
What are Digestive Disorders?
Digestive Disorders affect the gastrointestinal tract (GI), the long muscular tube that begins in the mouth and ends in the anus that is highly reactive in some people.
Irritation and/or inflammation can occur in different parts of the GI tract, and may be diagnosed as reflux, acid reflux, heartburn, gastro-esophageal/oesophageal reflux disease (GERD/GORD), diverticulitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), IBS with constipation, IBS with diarrhoea, a mix of both, or unclassified.
Food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance, can also cause digestive disorders.
Then there are those that are classified as autoimmune conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (both classified as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD), and celiac / coeliac disease.

Common Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
The physical symptoms that most IBS clients report are: abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, nausea and/or vomiting.
Often the physical discomfort is accompanied by psychological discomfort – anxiety, fear and sometimes panic regarding making it to the bathroom in time, location of bathrooms in new situations, worry about physical appearance, gurgling sounds, bad breath, gas/wind, managing pain, etc.
As stress plays a major role in many digestive disorders, deep relaxation is beneficial, and is extremely effective in reducing symptoms and healing the digestive tract when paired with targeted hypnotherapy for IBS / IBD.
The good news is that we can help you!
Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist & Counsellor Samantha Jones has more than 25 years’ experience in helping clients just like you as a specialist in this field.

Clinical trial: predictive factors for response to gut-directed hypnotherapy for refractory irritable bowel syndrome, a post hoc analysis (2024)
[Findings]
These data suggest that patients with a higher burden of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal symptoms are most likely to benefit from gut-specific behavioural intervention for refractory IBS. Clinical assessment of gastrointestinal, somatic and psychological symptom profiles may play a role in selecting patients for gut-directed hypnotherapy.
Randomised clinical trial: the efficacy of gut-directed hypnotherapy is similar to that of the low FODMAP diet for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (2016)
[Findings]
Durable effects of gut-directed hypnotherapy are similar to those of the low FODMAP diet for relief of gastrointestinal symptoms. Hypnotherapy has superior efficacy to the diet on psychological indices. No additive effects were observed.
Long term benefits of hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome (2003)
[Findings]
This study demonstrates that the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years. Thus it is a viable therapeutic option for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Hypnotherapy in irritable bowel syndrome: a large-scale audit of a clinical service with examination of factors influencing responsiveness (2002)
[Findings]
This study clearly demonstrates that hypnotherapy remains an extremely effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and should prove more cost-effective as new, more expensive drugs come on to the market. It may be less useful in males with diarrhea-predominant bowel habit, a finding that may have pathophysiological implications.
Controlled trial of hypnotherapy in the treatment of severe refractory irritable-bowel syndrome (1984)
[Findings]
30 patients with severe refractory irritable-bowel syndrome (IBS) were randomly allocated to treatment with either hypnotherapy or psychotherapy and placebo. The psychotherapy patients showed a small but significant improvement in abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and general well-being but not in bowel habit. The hypnotherapy patients showed a dramatic improvement in all features, the difference between the two groups being highly significant. In the hypnotherapy group no relapses were recorded during the 3-month follow-up period, and no substitution symptoms were observed.
