Different Types of Eating Disorders

These eating disorders may have serious medical consequences.

Do you suffer from any on the following?

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by restricting calorie/kilojoule intake / certain food groups such as fats or carbohydrates, skipping meals and/or obsessively adhering to unhealthy rules in an effort to lose weight, even when severely underweight.

People with anorexia nervosa will also take any opportunity to burn calories/kilojoules through exercise, many times in secret, so as not to arouse suspicion.

There may be immense satisfaction in the beginning with the ability to control intake of calories/kilojoules and lose weight; however, over time, this gives way to a feeling of being out of control, particularly when there is recognition that a problem exists.

There are many physical warning signs besides weight loss.

These include dizziness, loss of balance and coordination, fainting, feeling cold, lethargy, sleeping difficulties, hair loss, looking gaunt, pale, fragile and unwell, constipation or other digestive disorders and/or loss of menstruation in women.

Psychologically, there is a fear of gaining weight, anxiety around food and meal times, irritability/anger, lack of focus and concentration, obsessive and rigid black and white thinking, low self-esteem, depression, extreme sensitivity to comments about weight, body shape, and preoccupation with body shape and image, etc.

Bulimia Nervosa is characterized by repeated binge eating to excess, followed by purging/vomiting, or other compensatory behaviour.

Physical warning signs are similar to those of anorexia nervosa, however bulimics are typically able to hide their disorder more easily because they are usually not as underweight as anorexics.

Psychologically there are also similarities; however, those with bulimia nervosa tend to suffer more from immense guilt, shame and disgust at their own behaviour and lack of control around food.

EXERCISE BULIMIA:
Exercise bulimia is characterized by excessive exercise in order to burn more calories/kilojoules, or the energy consumed, in an effort to lose or maintain weight.

In the case of Binge Eating Disorder (BED), a person binges on large amounts of food but does not engage in a compensatory behaviour to rid the food from the body.

Binge eating is characterized by eating an extraordinary amount of food, often calorie/kilojoule-dense food, containing fat, sugar and carbohydrates – such as icecream, chocolate, cake, breads biscuits, etc. – within a short amount of time.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which is also known as body dysmorphia or dysmorphic syndrome, is a body image disorder characterized by obsessive and intrusive thoughts about real or imagined imperfections in physical appearance.

The persistent obsessive nature of their thoughts can lead to low self-esteem, avoidance of being seen, social anxiety and depression.

Clients with BDD will often try to camouflage their perceived ‘flaws’, with clothes, posture and/or make-up, obsessively compare their ‘flaws’ to others without such ‘flaws’, will seek out cosmetic treatments, if available, and may engage in excessive grooming or excessive exercise.

Clients with BDD may also have other diagnoses, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or other eating disorder, social anxiety disorder or depression, as some of the symptoms overlap.

Compulsive eating or compulsive overeating is a pattern of behaviour rather than a disorder, and can be described as a food addiction.

There is a fine line between BED and compulsive eating, although compulsive overeating is largely eating more than enough ‘good’ food at meal times rather than an episode of binging on ‘bad’ food.
