All Welcome!

What Brings Couples to Therapy
Couples seek therapy for a variety of reasons: when there is a longstanding unresolved issue, after a traumatic event, or affair, and often as a last resort.
Sometimes one party is ‘over it’ and the other is desperately trying to ‘save’ the relationship.
Emotions can be highly charged, and communication can totally break down.
Other times both may want the relationship to continue but can’t see a way forward.
A couple may have separated but want to sort out their differences, and be amicable for the sake of their children.
We explain relationships like this:
Couples bring a suitcase of issues from the past (known and unknown), empty it out in front of each other and have a relationship over the top of it.
There are issues that arise from the relationship dynamic, and many more that are triggered by it, but are firmly planted in the past.
Samantha Jones can help you sift through and resolve your relationship differences, and strengthen the united values you share.
The aim is for both of you to move forward in an empowering way.

We do Relationship, Marriage & Couples Therapy differently!
In the first Session, both of you will be together, where the issues get laid on the table.
Clinical Hypnotherapist & Counsellor Samantha Jones will assess the dynamics between the two of you, what you both want going forward, and how best to achieve that.
It is recommended that the first appointment is a double Session, and where time permits, hypnosis for one or both people.
The second and subsequent Sessions will then focus on resolving individual issues privately, and coming back in together along the way when required, and at the end.
Our Unique Approach: Optimal Evolution Hypnotherapy System™
1. We do more than Relationship Counselling.
Learn more
The clients we see for relationship, marriage or couple’s therapy seek us out because we provide a different form of therapy to conventional relationship counselling.
Conventional relationship counselling, in a nutshell, is all about awareness, analysis and basically conscious logical mind work to explore and manage relationship issues.
This is all great stuff, if your aim is to just manage your relationship using tools.
What we do in contrast though, is in addition to this, we work with and resolve subconscious influences that may be tainting your communication as well.
This makes relationship, marriage & couples therapy much more effective in terms of making progress.
2. We focus on the subconscious aspects of communication.

Relationships involve communication and being able to logically navigate your way through difficult conversations and conflict is both a skill and an art!
Openly discussing what is going awry with a neutral party like us at North Shore & City Hypnotherapy Sydney can be really helpful in identifying and resolving individual issues that are potentially causing problems in your marriage/partnership.
We all have a communication ‘style’, and your style is unique to you (please note the style we refer to is not determined by a questionnaire!)
There are many subconscious influences of your communication style, and your feelings, intentions, attitudes, expectations, and perceptions stemming from your beliefs, etc., will invariably filter through depending upon where you are and the subject matter.
Communication, though, is a two way street.
How you receive communication, process the information, interpret and respond to it is also highly influenced by your subconscious mind, and any unresolved issues from the past.
These issues may have been festering since early childhood, via messages from family, for example to behave a certain way.
[Example 1]
As a boy, you were told ‘boys don’t cry.’
You interpreted that as ‘boys who cry are weak.’
You make the decision ‘I am a boy, I have cried therefore I am weak, and must not show weakness.’
This can lead to over compensatory behaviour when it is perceived you may be judged to be weak.
So, you become direct and domineering in your communication style, which may intimidate or challenge your partner.
[Example 2]
As a girl, you observed your mother helping and nurturing others.
You were rewarded for the same behaviour.
You may make the decision that ‘nurturing is helpful, it’s the right thing to do.’
Later in life, you may become overprotective, smothering or controlling.
This may disempower your partner, and challenge them to assert their own independence.
This can lead to conflict.
These are very simplistic examples to demonstrate how messages overt or covert, become beliefs, generate thoughts and feelings and can result in communication difficulties.
3. We will optimize therapy for your relationship/partnership/marriage.

Comparing the effectiveness of Gottman and Dattilio couples therapy methods for mitigating difficulties in emotion regulation (2023)
[Abstract]
Many studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of different couples therapy methods for mitigating difficulties in emotion regulation; however, few studies have compared the effectiveness of these methods. Therefore, the present study compares the effectiveness of the Gottman couples therapy and the Dattilio couples therapy methods for mitigating difficulties in emotion regulation of coupled partnerships. Though an analysis of the findings of the present study shows that these two approaches work independently of each other, they are both effective in mitigating difficulties in emotion regulation.
Examining the Effectiveness of Gottman Couple Therapy on Improving Marital Adjustment and Couples’ Intimacy (2018)
[Abstract]
The present study aimed at examining the effectiveness of Gottman couple therapy on improving marital adjustment and couples’ intimacy.
Method: This was a semi- experimental study with pretest, post-test, and follow-up assessments. A total of 16 couples (32 individuals) were selected using convenience sampling method considering inclusion- exclusion criteria; they were then randomly assigned into experimental (N = 16) and control (N = 16) groups. Participants of the experimental group received ten 45-minute sessions of Gottman’s couple therapy. The research tools were Spanier Questionnaire and Walker and Thompson’s Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Mixed design MANOVA.
Results: Findings revealed that Gottman’s couple therapy approach had positive effects on improving marital adjustment (P = 0/001) and couples’ intimacy (P = 0/001). Furthermore, the results of assessments in the follow-up period indicated that Gottman’s couple therapy had enduring effects on marital adjustment and couples’ intimacy.
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, Gottman method can be used as an effective treatment to improve marital relationships, adjustment, and intimacy. Therefore, researchers, therapists, and other authorities should pay particular attention to this method.
