OCD

is an anxiety disorder where sufferers have intrusive thoughts  and/or obsessions (but not always), often (but not always) leading to a compulsive action to reduce feelings of anxiety, only to have them resurface again for the cycle to continue repetitively for a period of time.

Obsessions

are recurring thoughts that are persistent. A person’s obsessive thoughts or intrusive thoughts may be worries, fears or anxieties about themselves, family members or other people.

The thoughts may be centred around religious beliefs, fears about death and mortality, diseases, harming self or someone else, and/or be sexual in nature to give some examples.

Many people recognize the difference between reality and these obsessions but still feel compelled to do something to ease the anxiety and in the belief they will stop.

Compulsions

are the behaviours that people feel compelled to perform to ease the obsessions, or to feel ‘right’, ‘perfect’ or ‘balanced’ in some way.

A proportion of those with OCD will have a belief that if they don’t act out the ritual or compulsion that something bad will happen to them or someone else. The panic and sense of dread drives them to continue the compulsion, even if they know on another level that this isn’t rational behaviour, or healthy for them to continue to do so.

Like an addiction, the internal dialog can ‘trick’ the mind into performing the rituals just ‘one more time’ for relief and a promise to resist next time to no avail.
